Location monitoring is a supervision condition that is used as an alternative to detention to help enhance community safety.  This condition may require people to be confined to their home or monitored in the community by using a transmitter that can be worn or carried 24 hours a day.  On a case by case basis, the Court determines the extent to which a person's activities are restricted. Restrictions vary from 24-hour-a-day lockdown to allowing preapproved and scheduled absences for work, school, treatment, church, attorney appointments, court appearances, and other court-ordered obligations.

The officer's duties include an initial determination as to whether a person is eligible for location monitoring.  Once the condition is imposed, the officer will use the following steps to ensure compliance:

• Check monitoring equipment to make sure that it is working and check for signs of tampering.
• Respond to any alerts that may indicate a problem, including, unauthorized absence from home, failure to return home after an authorized absence, leaving early, returning late, or entrance into or near an unauthorized area.
• Take corrective action when the defendant does not adhere to their approved leave schedule, is in an unapproved location, tampers with equipment, or otherwise fails to comply with their release conditions.

Examples that may preclude participation in the location monitoring program include serious or repeat offenders, or people who have previously failed on supervision.
